"The Japanese government's Cabinet written reply on November 25 is still repeating the same old tune. The so-called 'consistent position' or 'unchanged position' on Taiwan is far from sufficient. What China and the international community require Japan to clarify is: What exactly is the 'consistent position' it refers to? Does Japan still adhere to the one-China principle?" Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday. These comments were made in response to the Japanese government, which, in a written reply approved at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, noted that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's earlier claim at a Diet meeting that a "Taiwan contingency" could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan "does not mean a change in the government's consistent position."
The written reply claims whether any given situation constitutes a survival-threatening situation is determined by the government comprehensively, based on all available information and the specific circumstances of each individual case that occurred. The government claims the Takaichi administration totally maintains this government position and does not believe any review or reconsideration is necessary. It claims peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits are important not only for Japan's security but also for the stability of the international community. The written reply adds that it is the consistent position of Japan to expect that the issue surrounding Taiwan Straits is resolved peacefully through dialogue.
Mao stated that regarding Takaichi's erroneous remarks on Taiwan, China has already repeatedly made clear its stern position. The remarks seriously violate the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, undermine the political foundation of China-Japan relations, and challenge the post-World War II international order. China firmly opposes them. People of insight in Japan have widely expressed doubts and criticism, and international public opinion has also condemned them.
Japan should explain honestly, accurately, and fully what its so-called "consistent position" is. Glossing over the issue with vague language, merely mentioning concepts while evading the substance, and attempting to muddle through will not work. Moreover, instead of reflecting on and correcting its mistakes, Japan again made irresponsible comments on the Taiwan question in the written reply, interfering in China's internal affairs, said the spokesperson.
"I want to stress that Taiwan is China's Taiwan, and how the Taiwan question is resolved and national reunification is achieved is entirely China's internal affair, which brooks no irresponsible remarks or interference from Japan. China once again urges Japan to take China's stern position seriously, to truly reflect on and correct its mistakes, to promptly retract the erroneous remarks, and to demonstrate its commitments to China through concrete actions," Mao added.
