When asked whether China accepts Japan's explanation as several senior Japanese officials reportedly claimed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan haven't changed Japanese government's existing position and that Tokyo has no intention of retracting them, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said "I don't know what Japan means by the Japanese government's existing position." On the Taiwan question, the Japanese government's position should be to adhere to the one-China principle and abide by the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, rather than deliberately creating ambiguity or backtracking on history, said Mao.

Mao said that 80 years ago, the Chinese military and civilians, including compatriots in Taiwan island, fought bravely and defeated the Japanese aggressors, winning the great victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

Taiwan returned to the motherland as a series of treaties and documents, including the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation and the Instrument of Surrender signed by Japan, all confirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan. Taiwan's restoration is an outcome of the victory of World War II and an important part of the post-war international order, Mao said.

Mao said that if the Japanese government's position on Taiwan question has truly not changed, then Japanese leaders should not link the so-called "survival-threatening situation" to the Taiwan question. They should not say one thing and do another — claiming verbally that "the position has not changed" while continually crossing red lines in action.

A mere statement that "the position has not changed" cannot address China's concerns. Japan should take China's serious demands seriously, retract the erroneous remarks, and faithfully reflect its commitments to China through concrete actions, said Mao.
