When asked to comment on the Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary's claim that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan were consistent with Japan's "traditional position," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that Takaichi's erroneous remarks on Taiwan fundamentally undermine the political foundation of China-Japan relations and have aroused strong indignation and condemnation among the Chinese people.

China solemnly urges Japan to retract the erroneous statements, stop provoking trouble on issues concerning China, and take concrete actions to admit and correct its mistakes so as to safeguard the political foundation of bilateral relations.

"If Japan refuses to retract the remarks and even continues making further mistakes, China will have no choice but to take firm and strong countermeasures. All consequences arising therefrom shall be borne by the Japanese side," Mao said.

When responding to another question on that China has said it would take further countermeasures if Takaichi does not retract her remarks on Taiwan and what specific further measures might China take at this stage, Mao said that Takaichi's erroneous remarks have damaged the political foundation of China-Japan relations, and China has every reason to respond.

Japan should first retract the erroneous remarks and take concrete actions to uphold the political foundation of China-Japan relations; otherwise, China will have no choice but to take further measures, said Mao.
