Japan totally unqualified to seek permanent seat on UN Security Council: China's permanent representative

As Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan are extremely erroneous and dangerous, such a country is totally unqualified to seek a permanent seat on the Security Council, said Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations on Tuesday local time.

Fu made these remarks at the UN General Assembly's annual debate on Security Council reform, noting that Takaichi made provocative remarks regarding Taiwan during a Diet meeting, claiming that the Chinese mainland's "use of force on Taiwan" could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan, implying the possibility of armed intervention in the Taiwan Straits.

"It is well known that there is only one China in the world, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China. Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory," said Fu.

"Such remarks are an affront to international justice, the post-war international order, and the basic norms of international relations, and represent a blatant departure from Japan's commitment to peaceful development," he said.

During his second round of speech, Fu noted in response to the absurd remarks made by the Japanese side that it has been 80 years since the victory in World War II. He stressed that the facts of World War II are undeniable and irrefutable, and Japan's war and colonial crimes are numerous and inexcusable, with no room for revision. Any defense by the Japanese side, only further proves that Japan still fails to confront and reflect on its history of aggression, he said.

Fu also noted that historically, Japanese militarism has repeatedly used the so-called "existential crisis" as an excuse to launch foreign invasions, including the September 18th Incident in 1931, when Japan claimed the right of "self-defense" to invade China and start the war of aggression, causing immense suffering to the people of China and the world.

"Today, when Takaichi again mentions the 'survival-threatening situation,' what is the true intention behind this? Is Japan trying to repeat the mistakes of militarism? Takaichi has also consistently advocated for the abolition of the 'renunciation of war' clause in Japan's pacifist constitution. In light of Takaichi's such malevolent actions, how can the international community believe that Japan can uphold its commitment to the peaceful path? How can we trust that Japan will defend fairness and justice? How can we believe that Japan is capable of fulfilling its responsibility to maintain international peace and security?" Fu questioned.

Fu stated that China sternly warns Japan to immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs, withdraw its wrongful and provocative remarks and actions that have crossed the line, and stop playing with fire on the Taiwan question.

"If Japan dares to attempt an armed intervention in the cross-Straits situation, it would be an act of aggression and definitely meet a firm response from China. We will firmly exercise our right to self-defense under the UN Charter and international law and defend China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Fu added.
