When asked to comment on the postponement of both the China-Japan joint opinion poll, and the Beijing-Tokyo Forum at China's request, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday, "Regarding the joint opinion poll you mentioned, I would note that the recent provocative remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding the Taiwan region have seriously undermined the political foundation of China-Japan relations and worsened public sentiment between the two countries."

Mao said that the environment and conditions under which the previous China-Japan joint opinion poll results were produced have changed significantly, making it necessary to reassess the relevance of the findings and the timing of their release. "The full responsibility lies with the erroneous remarks made by the Japanese leader," she added. "As for the Beijing-Tokyo Forum, I believe this was a decision reached through consultations among the organizers," she said.
