Tehran, IRNA -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally requested a pardon from President Isaac Herzog concerning the corruption cases he faces, the president's office said on Sunday.

Netanyahu, who is on trial in three separate cases involving charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, has consistently denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty. The cases were filed in 2019.

"The Office of the President is aware that this is an extraordinary request which carries with it significant implications," Herzog's office said in a statement. "After receiving all of the relevant opinions, the president will responsibly and sincerely consider the request."

The pardon appeal comes amid international attention on the long-running legal proceedings.

Earlier in November, Herzog received a letter from US President Donald Trump urging him to pardon Netanyahu, who is also the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court over war crimes in Gaza.

Trump had previously voiced support for a pardon during an address to the Israeli parliament in October.
