The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy is set to launch a military exercise in Iran's southern territorial waters in the Persian Gulf with the participation of various units from the elite force.
The naval drill, codenamed Shahid Mohammad Nazeri, is scheduled to kick off on Thursday and will take place across the Persian Gulf, the Nazeat maritime zone - Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Siri islands, the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the Sea of Oman.
Nazeri was the commander of the elite commando units of the IRGC Navy. He is widely recognized in Iran for his direct involvement in the capture of 10 American sailors - nine men and one woman - who wandered into Iran's territorial waters on January 12, 2016.
The sailors were detained after their boat drifted into Iranian waters off Farsi Island, an outpost in the middle of the Persian Gulf that has been used as a base for the IRGC speedboats since the 1980s.
The IRGC is currently hosting the Sahand-2025 joint anti-terrorism exercise involving military units from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Iran's East Azarbaijan Province.
The extensive exercise, codenamed Sahand-205 and hosted by the IRGC Ground Force, started in the operational area of the Imam Zaman Mechanized Brigade in Shabestar County on Monday, and is scheduled to wrap up on December 5.
The SCO, which has its headquarters in China, is the world's largest regional organization in terms of area and population. It has nine member states, namely, Iran, China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
In July 2023, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization officially approved Iran's full-fledged membership in the organization.
