Tehran, IRNA -- Deputy Chief of the Iranian Army for Coordination Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says Iran must boost its naval power to advance a maritime-based economy, stressing that the country's shipping and tanker routes are securely protected in high-risk waters.
"Today, our shipping lines and oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden and areas where pirates are present are well preserved and safeguarded. This itself is a sign of the presence of a strong and firm naval force in Islamic Iran," Sayyari said on Saturday during a ceremony marking the addition of the destroyer Sahand and the Kordestan vessels to the Navy's fleet.
Highlighting the sea as a pillar of Iran's national power, he said the country's access to open waters through the "forever Persian Gulf" positions it to pursue growth.
He noted that "the sea is considered a source of wealth and power," and that Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has emphasized presence in international waters to gain "power, wealth, maritime-based development and the formation of a maritime economy."
Sayyari further said developing a maritime economy requires stronger naval capabilities built on skilled personnel, modern equipment and technology suited for both nearby and distant waters.
He added that every vessel added to the fleet is "better and more equipped" than the previous one, in line with the Leader's directives.
