London, IRNA -- A resolution proposed by the European Troika, namely France, Britain, and Germany, with US support, against Iran's peaceful nuclear program was adopted at the meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors.
The resolution was passed on Thursday with 19 votes in favor, 12 abstentions, and 3 against, without acknowledging Iran's consistent cooperation with the IAEA and Tehran was accused of failing to comply with its safeguards obligations.
Based on the recent report by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the document stresses the need for the Agency's immediate access to precise information about Iran's declared nuclear material stockpiles.
This resolution, the seventh since the official closure of the Possible Military Dimensions (PMD) file of Iran's nuclear program in 2015, requests the IAEA Director General to submit reports on Iran's implementation of its safeguards agreement under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) before each regular quarterly BoG meeting, as well as on the implementation of all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, in line with past practice.
Yesterday, eight countries including China, Russia, and Iran issued a joint statement urging member states to resist politicization of Iran's peaceful nuclear program and not to support the draft resolution. The statement welcomed high-level engagement between the IAEA Director General and Iranian officials, as well as Tehran's cooperation in granting access to non-attacked facilities but warned that the new anti-Iran resolution could undermine the current dialogue and positive atmosphere of cooperation.
The statement also cautioned that creating a parallel reality in reporting mechanisms would damage the unity, credibility, and institutional integrity of the Agency. These countries emphasized the need to preserve the technical and impartial nature of the IAEA and called on all members to resist politicization of safeguards issues regarding Iran and to refrain from supporting the draft resolution.
The Islamic Republic of Iran had earlier warned that any reckless action at the Board of Governors would be met with a firm response. Reza Najafi, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative in Vienna, said that the illegal move by the US and three European countries would not change the current status of safeguards implementation in Iran, a situation he described as the result of Washington and the Israeli regime's criminal aggression against Iran, and the complicity of the three European countries.
Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, also said that if the anti-Iran resolution were adopted at the BoG, Iran would certainly undertake fundamental reviews of its policies.
