Board of Governors' resolution won't change Iran's safeguards status: Iranian envoy

Tehran, IRNA -- Iran's permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has criticized the United States and three European countries for submitting a new draft resolution to the IAEA Board of Governors, saying the move would only complicate the current situation without affecting Iran's safeguards implementation.
Reza Najafi made the remarks on Saturday ahead of the Board of Governors (BoG) meeting scheduled for November 19-21. The US along with Britain, France, and Germany—collectively known as E3— plan to table a resolution against Iran over its cooperation with the IAEA, during the upcoming meeting.
The Iranian envoy said that Washington and the E3 are once again attempting to "exploit international mechanisms to impose their illogical and coercive positions on the Iranian people."
"Forcing the [IAEA] Director General to report on the basis of expired UN Security Council resolutions is not only entirely unlawful and unjustified, but in practice, will also add to the existing complexities and deliver yet another blow to diplomacy," Najafi said.
He added that the push by the US and the E3 would not alter the current status of safeguards implementation in Iran, which he said had been affected by the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran in June this year. He was referring to the cooperation process between Iran and the IAEA, which Tehran scaled back under a parliamentary law passed after the agency declined to condemn US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran's nuclear sites in June.
The Iranian envoy called on all member states of the BoG to oppose what he described as destructive unilateral actions of the US and its European partners.
He also reaffirmed Iran's right to take appropriate measures in response to any "illegal and unjustified" moves.
