Today, the European Union decided to reinstate restrictive measures against Iran for failing to comply with the terms of the nuclear deal (JCPOA). Over the weekend, sanctions on Iran were reinstated by the United Nations.
Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasised that the decision of the European Union and the United Nations is an important step in preserving international security and the rules-based order.
"Iran has consistently ignored nuclear agreements and, in response to their non-compliance, both the UN and the EU decided to reinstate restrictive measures against Iran," Tsahkna said. "The proliferation of nuclear weapons poses a direct threat to global security and Estonia supports the steps of the international community to prevent the threat posed by nuclear weapons."
The renewed measures include travel bans and asset freezes for listed persons and entities, economic and financial restrictions, including on trade and transport, and import bans on Iranian crude oil, gas and petrochemical products. Asset freezes will be reinstated for the Central Bank of Iran and major Iranian commercial banks.
"Iran's failure to fulfil its obligations undermines trust and stability," Tsahkna said. "By acting together, the EU and its partners send a clear signal: failure to deliver will have consequences."
Tsahkna said that Estonia continues to support diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and find solutions. "Estonia will continue to work with partners to ensure that Iran abides by international law and to keep the world safe from nuclear threats."
