AEOI chief: Israeli-US strikes on Iran nuclear facilities eroded IAEA Safeguards

The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) says the June strikes by the Israeli regime and the United States on Iran's civilian nuclear facilities seriously harmed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safeguards.

Addressing the 69th regular session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna on Monday, Mohammad Eslami said the illegal strikes also threatened the integrity of the global non-proliferation regime.

Iran will not yield to pressure and will not renounce its inherent and legitimate rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and international law, he said.

Iran's nuclear chief noted that the IAEA is currently at a critical juncture, and the "criminal and cowardly attacks" against Iran seriously eroded the credibility of the IAEA, and struck at the very heart of its Safeguards system.

"Enemies should realize that Iran's nuclear science and technology are entirely indigenous, and cannot be obliterated by means of military strikes, aggression, and assassinations.

"The Zionist regime's goal is not only to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities. It has rather long sought to sabotage the path of diplomacy and peace," Eslami said.

He called on the UN nuclear watchdog to condemn the attacks on Iran's safeguarded nuclear facilities and restore respect for international law.

"Address Iran's legitimate security concerns and return integrity and impartiality to the Agency," he said.

"Any course of action other than this would constitute a betrayal of the UN Charter and the Agency's Statute, create a dangerous precedent, and risk normalizing illegality while eroding the very foundations upon which the international order is built," Eslami stated.

The AEOI chief said the IAEA, despite Iran's formal correspondence and submission of a request to strongly condemn attacks on its safeguarded nuclear facilities - documented in INFCIRC/130, has failed to condemn such unlawful actions, could not protect the integrity of its Safeguards system, and failed to fulfill its Statutory mission.

"This silence and inaction will remain a disgraceful stain in the history of the Agency."

Eslami further highlighted that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi's recent report confirms that, as a direct result of the aggressive actions carried out by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran's safeguarded nuclear facilities, inspections and verification activities have been suspended.

"It must therefore be emphasized that the principal cause of the suspension of inspections and verification activities of the Agency is the unlawful use of force against Iran's nuclear facilities by the United States and the Israeli regime."

Iran's nuclear chief then called on the international community to oppose the glaring contradictions, and to support the principles of sovereignty, non-use of force, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

"We call on the international community to demonstrate that no one is above the law."

On June 13, the Israeli regime launched an unlawful aggression against Iran, leading to the assassination of many senior commanders, nuclear scientists, and ordinary citizens.

Iran retaliated in less than 24 hours with a barrage of missiles and drones, and followed it up with a series of retaliatory operations under True Promise III.

The US entered the war on behalf of Israel on June 22, when its bombers hit three Iranian nuclear sites in brazen violation of international law.

In response, Iran launched a missile strike on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military air base in West Asia, in an act of self-defense.

The Israeli regime unilaterally accepted a US-proposed truce deal on June 24.
