Tehran, IRNA -- Head of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Ebrahim Azizi says the legislature will support and uphold any cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if it is in accordance with the law.
Azizi made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to reporters ahead of an emergency committee meeting scheduled for the evening. The session, requested by Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, will be attended by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
He said the commission would review the agreement between Iran and the IAEA signed in Cairo recently, given the sensitivity of the issue and the emphasis of lawmakers on the strict implementation of the law, and in line with addressing the demands of the people.
Referring to the existing law, Azizi said that any agreement with the Agency must ensure full respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iran, especially safeguarding nuclear sites and scientists, as well as ensuring full respect for the country's inherent rights, especially uranium enrichment specified in Article 4 of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
He pointed out that the Islamic Republic suspended its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog in line with a parliamentary law, which was also approved by the Guardian Council.
"If the agreement made is in accordance with the law, the Parliament will support and uphold it," Azizi said in reference to a deal reached between Araghchi and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in Egypt last week.
Warning that the legislature is duty-bound to take action if there has been a violation or deviation from the law, the head of the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee emphasized that "the Islamic Republic would continue to defend the rights of its people and confront the excesses of its enemies."
