Iran Urges IAEA to Counter Sanctions

VOA News 18 August 2010

Iran's ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency has urged the organization to come to its defense against sanctions from the United Nations Security Council.

Iranian news agency ISNA quotes Ali Asghar Soltanieh as saying Wednesday that the U.N. agency should know that Iran has been cooperating to show its goodwill and transparency.

Iran is under four sets of U.N. sanctions for its nuclear program, which many in the international community suspect is aimed at creating a nuclear weapon. Tehran denies the charge.

Another ISNA report also quotes the head of Iran's atomic energy agency, Ali Akbar Salehi as saying late Tuesday that Iran is to announce "good news" about its nuclear technology soon. He did not provide any details.

Iran is due to start up its first nuclear energy reactor in Saturday, using Russian fuel. Iran says the process will be supervised by IAEA observers.
