Korean Writers Meet to Implement June 15 Joint Declaration

Pyongyang, July 21 (KCNA) -- A meeting of Korean writers for implementing the June 15 joint declaration was held at the People's Palace of Culture on Wednesday. Present there were Vice-Premier of the Cabinet Ro Tu Chol, Chairman of the C.C., the General Federation of the Unions of Literature and the Arts of Korea Kim Jong Ho, writers and poets in Pyongyang.
It was attended by the south side's delegation led by Ko Un, chairman for reunification of the Association of Men of National Literature, a delegation of Korean writers in Japan led by Kim Jong Su, chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the Union of Korean Writers and Artistes in Japan (UKWAJ), and Han Kil Su, department director of the General Association of Koreans in China, and his party.
Kim Pyong Hun, chairman of the C.C., the Korean Writers Union (KWU), made an opening address at the meeting before the introduction of congratulatory letters and messages from various compatriots organizations in the north and the south of Korea and overseas and literary organizations and men of literature in different countries.
In his congratulatory speech, Ro Tu Chol said that the 70 million Koreans follow with deep interest the meeting of Korean writers, the first of its kind in 60 years of national division, hoping that it would mark a historic occasion of greatly contributing to the reunification of the country and the development of national literature.
All the writers, he said, should produce successful works meeting the need of the era after the publication of the June 15 joint declaration so as to help all the fellow countrymen cherish more deeply the idea of "By our nation itself", the spirit of national independence, and thus positively contribute to the great unity of the nation.
Paek Rak Chong, chairman of the south side's preparatory committee under the June 15 Joint Committee, said in his congratulatory speech that this meeting has brought into sight a new type of Korean literature that would inspire the entire nation.
At the meeting, Vice-Chairman of the KWU Central Committee Kim Tok Chol, poet Ri Si Yong who is a delegate of the south side, and Chairman of the UKWAJ Central Standing Committee Kim Jong Su made reports under the subjects of "On duty and role of writers of national literature in the June 15 reunification era", "On the formation of the 'June 15 Association of Men of National Literature'" and "On instituting the 'June 15 Prize for Reunification Literature'". Then followed speeches.
A five-point declaration of the meeting was adopted. The declaration said: First. We, Korean writers will regard the June 15 Joint Declaration as the only landmark for national reunification and resolutely defend and implement it to the last. Second. We, Korean writers will turn out to create literary works in the spirit of national independence, peace against war and reunification and patriotism under the banner of "By our nation itself".
Third. We, Korean writers will unite close irrespective of ideology, religion, birthplace and political stand and intensify solidarity and unity in activities for national literature.
Fourth. We will form the "June 15 Association of Men of National Literature as a joint organization of Korean literary men at home and abroad and take an active part in its activities and edit and publish its organ "Reunification Literature" well to serve as a close companion of all our fellow countrymen.
Fifth. We fully support the proposal for awarding the "June 15 Prize for Reunification Literature" to those who make a literary contribution to national reunification as a commendation to be made on behalf of the nation and will work hard to have the honor of receiving the prize.
The head of the south side's delegation in his closing address said that the meeting represented the desire for the festival of national literature whose final goal is to reunify the country.
