Tehran, IRNA -- Tehran has condemned the continuation of the United States' "unlawful and inhumane" sanctions against Cuba, welcoming the recent UN General Assembly resolution that denounced Washington's decades-long embargo on the island nation.

In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the US sanctions, imposed for more than six decades, have targeted the fundamental rights and development of the Cuban people.

He denounced the sanctions as a "flagrant violation" of the UN Charter and international law, and stressed that their consequences amount to "a crime against humanity."

Expressing solidarity with the Cuban government and people in the face of US intimidation and pressure, Baghaei said the overwhelming support for the resolution reflected the international community's opposition to American bullying and lawlessness.

He further noted that the damage and losses inflicted on Cuba by the illegal sanctions entailed Washington's international responsibility, adding that the US must be held accountable for such "criminal actions."

On Wednesday, an overwhelming majority of the UN's 193 Member States urged Washington to end its sanctions on Cuba, defying Washington's sustained pressure tactics to sway the vote.

The UN General Assembly approved the resolution condemning the embargo for the 33rd consecutive year, with 165 countries voting in favor, seven against, and 12 abstaining.
