Escorted by a Vietnamese naval vessel, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy Task Group 989, which is conducting a far-sea comprehensive training mission, arrived at Cam Ranh Port in Vietnam on Friday for a four-day friendly visit, according to the PLA Navy.
The task group includes amphibious dock landing ship Changbaishan, naval training vessel Zheng He and comprehensive training vessel Xiangqianjin-1. They arrived at designated waters and formed a joint fleet with the Vietnamese vessel, docking at the port at around 10 am, the PLA Navy said in a post on its official WeChat account.
More than 100 people, including staff from the Chinese embassy and consulates in Vietnam, representatives of local overseas Chinese, and officers and soldiers from Vietnamese Navy Region 4, welcomed the task group at the port. Cadets from Naval University of Engineering and the Naval Aeronautical University lined up on deck and greeted the crowd, according to the post.
The Vietnamese side held a welcome ceremony at the port, where staff presented flower garlands to the commander of the Chinese task group, and commanders from both sides exchanged greetings.
This is the third time that vessel Zheng He has visited Vietnam, and the first time for Changbaishan and Xiangqianjin-1 to visit the country, the PLA Navy said.
During the visit, officers and sailors of the Chinese task group will pay courtesy calls, conduct visits, hold seminars, and participate in friendly ball games at Vietnamese Navy Region 4, the Vietnamese Naval Academy, and other institutions. The Changbaishan and the Zheng He will host ship open days, and a deck reception will be held on Monday aboard the Changbaishan, according to the post.
