China's UN envoy criticizes US as biggest obstacle to global climate cooperation

At a UN Security Council debate on climate and security on Thursday, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, rebutted US accusations twice, saying the US should stop shifting blame and instead work with others to tackle global climate challenges. He stressed that China remains one of the most committed and effective countries in cutting emissions and delivering on its climate pledges, according to China Media Group (CMG).

Geng stated that while China is indeed the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide at the moment, it has never shied away from this fact. More importantly, China is universally recognized as the most resolute, powerful, and effective country in honoring its emission reduction commitments - a genuine doer in the global fight against climate change.

He emphasized that China, with a population of 1.4 billion and the world's second-largest GDP, has contributed over 30 percent to global economic growth on average over the years, while its per capita carbon emissions were not among the high levels in the world.

Geng criticized the US for reversing progress and undermining international cooperation, noting that it has twice withdrawn from the Paris Agreement and even called climate change the "greatest hoax" in human history. Such actions, he said, have made the US the biggest obstacle to global climate cooperation.

When it comes to climate change, it is clear to all who is taking real action and who is shirking responsibility, who seeks cooperation and who is sowing discord, Geng said.

Geng concluded by calling on the international community to uphold cooperation and solidarity in addressing climate change, rather than resorting to finger-pointing and scapegoating.
