China and the UK have differences in history and culture, and it is just natural to have some disagreements. Regarding occasional noise and disruptions, the two sides should keep a clear mind, handle them actively and properly, and maintain the main tone of the development of bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a phone conversation with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Thursday.

Wang, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, held a phone conversation with Cooper at the latter's request, according to a readout published by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Against the backdrop of a turbulent international situation, China-UK relationship will move forward; otherwise, it will suffer setbacks. The two sides should enhance strategic communication and promote the sustainable development of bilateral relations on a track that is sound, reciprocal and stable. China and the UK are both major countries and permanent members of the UN Security Council, and shoulder important international responsibilities for world peace, stability and development, said Wang.

The Chinese Foreign Minister said that China firmly upholds the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the central role of the United Nations in the international system, respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, advocates the peaceful settlement of disputes, supports global free trade and WTO rules, and ensures the stability of global industrial and supply chains. China and the UK generally share same position on the above major issues, which is an important part of deepening the two countries' strategic cooperative relations. China stands ready to work with the UK to tackle global challenges jointly and promote world peace and development.

Regarding occasional noise and disruptions, the two sides should keep a clear mind, handle them actively and properly, and maintain the main tone of the development of bilateral relations, Wang noted.

Cooper said the UK and China share many common interests. The UK attaches great importance to its relations with China, and looks forward to strengthening high-level exchanges with China and expanding cooperation in such fields as security, development and environment. As permanent members of the UN Security Council and major countries supporting multilateralism, the UK and China need to maintain regular strategic communication, jointly tackle global challenges such as climate change, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, safeguard global free trade and the multilateral system.
