On 3 December in Brussels, Kęstutis Budrys, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. The Minister and the President of the European Parliament discussed Belarusian hybrid actions against Lithuania and the European Union.
The Minister emphasized at the meeting that Belarusian hybrid attacks against Lithuania and other EU member states are not happening for the first time. A few years ago, the Minsk regime instrumentalised migration, and now it uses smuggler balloons. According to the Minister, what the Lukashenka regime is doing is a targeted and organized attack on the EU, which requires a quick and decisive response.
"The hybrid actions of the Belarusian regime are a targeted attack on the European Union as a whole. The regime seeks to create confusion in our societies, deliberately threatens civil aviation, detains the property of EU companies, blackmails, and conducts disinformation campaigns against EU countries. The strong position of the European Parliament and the call for action by the other EU institutions are very much needed. Only a firm, united EU response can provide the necessary retaliation to the regime and ensure the security of EU citizens", said the Minister.
The Minister called on the European Parliament to adopt a resolution in which the EU would strongly condemn the actions of the Belarusian regime, demand their cessation and the return of illegally seized assets of EU member states, as well as called on the European Commission and the Council of the EU to take immediate countermeasures in the form of individual and sectoral sanctions against Belarus.
