Overview: The T-72, which entered production in 1971, was first seen in public in 1977. The T-72 was deployed within the USSR and exported to non-Soviet Warsaw Pact armies and several other countries. In addition to production in the USSR, it has been built under license in Czechoslovakia, India, Poland and the former Yugoslavia. Iraq has about 700 of these tanks, mostly within its Republican Guard units. During the Gulf War, Iraq lost about 300 of the tanks, mostly to U.S. aircraft.
OTHER GROUND EQUIPMENT
T-62 tank: The main battle tank for the Soviets in the 1960s. Iraq operates about 500 of these after losing the same number during the Gulf War.
Other armor: Soviet T-54/55 tanks, French, Chinese and Brazilian light tanks and armored scout vehicles also exist in Iraq's arsenal.
ATTACK MISSILES
Al-Hussein

Range: 370-400 miles
Speed: NA
Guidance: NA
Warhead: Chemical, biological, nuclear or conventional unitary blast
Overview: The SCUD B variants are transported on the MAZ-543 (8x8) truck, which serves also as an erector and launcher for the missiles. Iraq acquired about three dozen SCUD-B missiles from the Soviet Union in 1974. Since then, Iraq has used the SCUD-B as a base model for its own missile program such as the al-Hussein and al-Abbas. The original SCUD-Bs had effective ranges of only 240 miles. Iraq made modifications to give its missiles a range of 300-600 miles.
AIR DEFENSE MISSILES
SA-6 anti-aircraft missile
Primary function: Low altitude surface-to-air missile
Length: 18 feet 8 inches
Weight: 1,321 pounds
Diameter: 1 foot
Range: 2-15 miles
Speed: NA
Guidance: STRAIGHT FLUSH and LONG TRACK fire control radar
Warhead: 123 pound HE-fragmentation
Overview: According to intelligence, Baghdad has been able to upgrade elements of its air defense systems. The installation of fiber optics allows for radar systems to emit fewer tell-tale electronic signals. Unable to acquire the best Russian-designed systems, Iraq still relies on the Soviet-era SA-2, SA-3 or SA-6 missiles systems.
