124 Squadron - The Rolling Sword
The 124 squadron was established in the 1960s with the Bell 47G, the Sikorsky S-55, and the Sikorsky S-58. In February 1975, over 50 Bell 212 helicopters were added to the squadron, which played a part in Israel's operations in Lebanon during late 1982. During the Lebanon war, Israel lost two Bell 212s and has lost at least two since then. In the early 1990s, several UH-60 helicopters were added to the 124 squadron while several of the Bell 212s were transferred to squadron 123. Israel acquired nearly 40 S-70 helicopters in two deals completed in 1998 and 2002, respectively. As of 2005, the 124 squadron flew only UH-60A and S-70A helicopters.
