Okeanos Type 209-1200
The h/v OKEANOS is modernized y/b t. "POSEIDON". The h/b. "POSEIDON "after a 25-year and longer presence in the Greek seas are the need to renew their systems so that they can meet the needs of modern warfare at sea. So the h/v OKEANOS joined the modernization program NEPTUNE-II, which took place at the premises of the Hellenic shipyards Skaramanga.
In 2002 the Hellenic Navy initiated Neptune II Mid-Life Modernization program. According to this, the first three of the second batch of the Type 209 boats were to be modernized, by cutting them in half and inserting a 6.5 meter extension to incorporate a fuel-cell based AIP system. Additionally flank array sonar, modern fire control system, electro-optic mast, SATCOM and sub Harpoon firing capability is to be fitted. HDW was the main contractor.
Upon completion of the mid-life upgrade of the first submarine, the S118 HS OCEANOS launched on February 2009, it was clear that the program underestimated the status of the fleet and many unplanned and therefore non-included works had to be performed for the successful conclusion of the project. In February 2009, two days before HS Okeanos, the first boat to undergo the Neptune II MLM was launched, the Hellenic Navy cancelled the program and expressed its wish to order two Type 209 submarines with AIP.
The tasks of modernization included:
- Change of all marine electronics, electronic warfare and weaponry (SONAR, RADAR, ESM, SDBT, etc.) with the integrated system of company ATLAS ELEKTRONIK ISUS and firing SUB HARPOON system installation.
- Noise reduction measures.
- Increasing the length of the vessel and add anaerobic propulsion system.
- General repair and/or replacement of main and auxiliary machinery.
The propulsion is achieved through a HP 4,600 engine, a propeller, while charging the array is made of 4 generators that run on DIESEL engines 4 HP 2400. Eadditional accomplished and in conjunction with the system of anaerobic propulsion (AIP), i.e. production of electricity from liquid fuel cells. this system relieves the h/b (where operationally required) from the enforcement procedure respirator for charging of arrays, a process that makes the h/b vulnerable to detection by ASW units.
The h/v OKEANOS will be fully equipped with antennas, transmitters and receivers that are necessary for their communications. The h/v OKEANOS bring the integrated weapon system ATLAS ELEKTRONIK ISUS company whose consoles with the possibility of switching between functions, will constitute the necessary maritime research systems, such as RADAR, ESM, GPS, PERISKOPIOY, etc. of course many modern technological achievements, OPTRONIC masts as with many imaging features will constitute important shipping and business accessories.
The ISUS completed weapon system, both the torpilles and the SUBHARPOON guided missiles, which will bring the h/b to 8 t/s and at backup locations. The same weapon system integrated, passive SONAR medium and low frequencies, other assistive functions for targeting and firing solution. Staff h/v OKEANOS consists of 6-7 officers and crew from 28-30 men (Permanent non-commissioned Professionals and Servicemen). The h/v OKEANOS can carry sufficient food and drinking water for voyage to 50 days, while no problem refueling with fuel-lubricants.
