WS-2 WeiShi [Guardian]

The WS-2 GMLRS is featured in the long range, high firing precision, powerful salvo firing force, quick battle reaction, easy operation, convenient maintenance and high security, etc. The rockets can be equipped with different warheads, used in striking large-scale surface targets.

Targets include: military base; airport; port; assembly fleet; important transport hinge; military industrial base; political and economical center; armor troops; artillery and rocket launch position; ground radar station and command control center; and other important military surface targets. Controlling system to adopt the strapdown inertial guidance system composed by low-cost inertial components, controlling the tripath attitude stability of the rocket body and increasing the controlling precision through combining the lateral and normal guidance.

After receiving the campaign mission, the troop should make ready preparation and get together in the battlefield through railway or highway. The WS-2 rockets should be firstly sent out from the battlefield warfare, and hoisted to the transport & loading truck (or directly hoisted to the launch truck), and then be sent to the waiting-position (or directly be sent to the launch position) based on the superior's command. After arriving in the launch position, the GMLRS should be unfolded immediately and conduct rocket launching after prompt preparation. After finishing the mission, the launch truck should retreat to the battlefield or waiting-position. The transport & loading truck should hoist new rockets promptly and prepare for the next round of battle.

The WS-2 GMLRS belongs to the conventional artillery tactical weapon. The GMLRS troop can be provided in the artillery brigade /division as a battalion; can be also provided in the heavy-division as a battalion/battery, directly subjecting to the group army or heavy-division. In the meanwhile, the launch rocket can do battle independently.

Long-range artillery includes the type-96 320mm MRLS, that can reach up to 200km with WS-2 rockets. Reports indicate that ongoing MRLS extensive development includes the Wei Shi series. The 400 mm WS-2 (Wei Shi 2) series has been developed by the Sichuan aerospace industry Corporation (SCaiC). The WS series is being developed to bridge the gap between conventional towed and self-propelled artillery systems and tactical missile systems.

The Sichuan Aerospace Industry Corporation (SCAIC) developed the 400 mm WS-2 (Wei Shi 2) Guided Multiple Rocket Weapon System (GMRWS) carried on the rear of an 8 8 cross-country truck chassis, with the powered launcher with two layers each of three launch tubes mounted at the rear. To provide a more stable firing platform, stabilisers are lowered to the ground by remote control. The rockets can be launched from the cab or away from it with the aid of a remote-control system. Some sources have indicated that the overall system was developed for the China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CPMIEC). CPMIEC is the overall contractor, with SCAIC responsible for the actual rockets. CEP is quoted as 600 meters, with a maximum flight speed of Mach 5.6 and a range of 200 km.

The rockets can be fitted with the following types of warhead to meet different user requirements:

  • Submunition carrying 540 bomblets with a High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead that is also highly effective against troops. The HEAT warhead will penetrate up to 85 mm of conventional steel armour and has a lethal radius of 7 meters.
  • Comprehensive effect cluster warhead carrying 61 sub-munitions with each sub-munition warhead containing approximately 200 preformed fragments and a shaped charge. It is claimed that the shaped charge will penetrate 180 mm of conventional steel armour. In addition the warhead also has a incendiary area effect of about 50 meters sq (4 m radius)
  • Fuel air explosive (FAE) called 'Cloud blasting warhead' by the company. This contains 120 kg of FAE and produces a high blast overpressure upon functioning (both duration and peak pressure). The over pressure is quoted as 0.1 MPa (29 psi) at 25 meters and 0.02 MPa (2.9 psi) at 50 meters. No data on pulse duration is provided.
  • High-explosive fragmentation incendiary which is called 'Blast burning warhead' by the company. This contains an undisclosed quantity of high explosive and incendiary pellets in addition to approximately 40,000 spherical steel preformed fragments. The lethal radius is claimed to be 85 meters.
  • High-explosive fragmentation called 'Lethal blasting warhead' by the company. It contains about 38,000 spherical pre-formed fragments and is claimed to have a lethal radius of 85 meters.

WS-3

The WS-3 is a 400mm high-precision guided MLRS / MGLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) designed and manufactured by Poly Technologies of Beijing, China. The WS-3 was unveiled during the Zhuhai Air Show in 2008. The WS-3 MGLRS is equipped with GPS/INS integrtaed navigation syetm and full range of control equipment to improve the firing accuarcy. The canister-launcher system is mounted on a high-mobile cross-country truck chassis with multiple functions of storage, transport and launch. The control system of the WS-3 is composed of navigation controller, GNSS antenna, low noise amplifier, actuator system, onboard battery, power distributor, onboard cable and flight control software. The WS-2 artillery system has a preparation time of less than 7 minutes.

WS-3 GMLRS is an advanced multi-purpose rocket weapon system used for striking and suppressing hostile deep group targets. It adopts GNSS/SINS integrated navigation and whole-course control technology for attitude control and guidance control, which enables the rocket to fly stably and hit targets with high accuracy. The control system is composed of navigation controller, GNSS antenna, low noise amplifier, actuator system, onboard battery, power distributor, on board cable net and flight control software.

WS-3A GMLRS takes high-mobile wheeled cross-country chassis as its carrier and adopts the canister-launch technology with multiple function of storage, transport and launch. If features long-range, high accuracy, strong firepower, quick response and convenient maintenance with a wide variety of warheads being adopted. WS-3A GMLRS can accomplish missions in rocket company as basic combat unit to attack targets in depth.

SY300

SY300 [Shen Ying, meaning Divine Eagle] guided rocket weapon system has participated twice in the Zhuhai Air Show, but this model is still poorly understood by the outside world. With the help of this air show appearance in a full-size model of analysis and discussion, it can be considered a piece of a jigsaw. The SY300 guided rocket weapon system appeared late, and did not win the Chinese military's selection of a new generation of long-range rockets. This model is used to export earnings.

The SY300 was designed after the 4th Academy and the 9th Academy of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) were merged to form a new 4th Academy.
