The Armed Forces Scientific and Technical Research Institute (CITEFA) is the only joint organization dedicated to scientific and technological activities and to research and development to meet National Defense requirements. Its purpose is to maintain our military potential in permanent evolution. At present, the Institute occupies 16 hectares with facilities covering 23,000 m2. Its main job is to produce studies and developments required by the Armed Forces with the approval of the Ministry of Defense, and to maintain, update and enhance its own capabilities in the field of military technology in order to meet future requirements.
The creation of the Institute of Scientific Researches and Technical of the FFAA [CITEFA] as joint organism of the three Armed Forces dates from year 1954, and its next antecedent was the Technical Department of the Main Directorate of Defense Industries, whose origin goes back to year 1941. Its mission was circumscribed to support technical for the production, and was integrated to a great extent, by investigators and foreign technicians specially contracted of diverse countries (German, Poles, Russians, etc.).
The good professional level of the establishment and the increasing demand of technology of the developments determined their natural expansion, and the diversification of the disciplines and capacities that were generated.
In its principles the Institute had a dispersed geographic location with laboratories in San Martín, Acassuso (Province of Buenos Aires) and the bank of tests of propellers in the Province of Cordova, whereas the Central Administration resided in the Federal Capital.
In 1969 the physical unification of CITEFA in the estate of 15 began Has at the moment occupies in the locality of Villa Martelli (Province of Buenos Aires) in the limit with the Federal Capital. In this location the greater growth of CITEFA throughout these thirty and two years took place, where today m2 of dedicated facilities tells on about 25,000 to laboratories and factories, in addition to a bank of land tests located of the Military Factory Villa Maria (Cordova).
In year 1973 it was created the Regime for the Personnel of Investigation and Developments of the Armed Forces (RPIDFA), with the purpose of attracting and of retaining to technicians and professionals with vocation for the study of necessary the technological disciplines for the Defense.
CITEFA today is an organism centralized and dispersed, dependent of the Ministry of Defense, dedicated to the execution of activities of investigation and development for this thematic one like only joint institution for the Armed Forces.
Within the CITEFA activities two types of processes are carried out: the maintenance of its capacities, necessary to maintain the state of availability that requires the National defense, and the development of specific projects, mainly for the Armed Forces.
Also it carries out works of recovery, engine power upgrade and modernization of elements and equipment of the FFAA and adviser to the Ministry of Defense and the Chancellery by its interval, in the atinentes subjects to international treaties referred to armaments or aspects related to the National defense.
In addition the multidisciplinary scientific research and the technological developments made by CITEFA for more than 40 years have allowed to the accumulation of important knowledge in different areas from science and the technology and its later application in the civil scope. This has constituted it in one of the organisms of science and technology recognized in the national and international scope.
