During Operation Desert Shield in 1990, the Armed Forces Recreation Center contracted for the services of the Cunard Princess, a luxury cruise ship, to provide recreation and relaxation to Operation Desert Storm service members. Originally, the plan had been to offer soldiers a three-day cruise in the Persian Gulf. It soon became obvious that service members who had been living in tents in the desert eating MREs and Wolfburgers were delighted simply to be in clean air conditioned quarters, eating their fill of gourmet food. Not moving the ship from the port of Baharain was also considerably cheaper. Military personnel soon began calling the ship the "Love Boat," after the homonymous television show.
