  • originally projected as a Baltimore class heavy cruiser
  • Placed out of commission in 1961 and in reserve at the Philadelphia Naval Yard.
  • Stricken 9 July 1991.
  • Efforts were undertaken to tow DES MOINES to Duluth, Minnesota and turn her into a floating museum and educational center.
  • ex-DES MOINES was removed from donation hold status on May 23, 2006 and authorized for disposal. The ship had been available for donation for 14 years. Ex-DES MOINES was towed from Philadelphia on August 21, 2006 and was scrapped, dismantled and recycled in Brownsville, Texas.

    CA 139 SALEM 7/4/1945 3/25/1947 5/14/1949 Stricken 12 July 1991. Preserved as a museum in Quincy, MA, donated 13 Oct 1994.
    CA 140 DALLAS 10/15/1945     Laid down at Bethlehem Quincy 15 Oct 1945, cancelled 6 June 1946, scrapped. Scrapped on the ways.
    CA 141 (NO NAME)       Cancelled, 7 Jan 1946. Never laid down, had been assigned to Bethlehem Quincy.
    CA 142 (NO NAME)       Cancelled, 12 Aug 1945. Never laid down, had been assigned to Bethlehem Quincy.
    CA 143 (NO NAME)       Cancelled, 12 Aug 1945. Never laid down, had been assigned to Bethlehem Quincy.

    CA 148 NEWPORT NEWS 11/1/1945 3/6/1948 1/29/1949 Suffered turret explosion, 1 Oct 1972 (20 killed) during a fire mission off the coast of Vietnam. Was the USN's last conventional gun cruiser in service when decommissioned, 27 June 1975. Sold for scrap, Feb 1993
