Operation Black Typhoon

September 9, 2004 - ?

A major military operation was launched against Tal Afar on September 9, 2004. Terrorists had displaced the local Iraqi Security forces and the city had become a suspected haven as well as staging grounds for insurgents. Many foreign fighters originating from Syria were believed to be in Tal Afar conducting anti-coalition activites. The 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) and Iraqi Security forces participated in this opertion.

Soliders pushed into the city on September 9, 2004 and were not able to overrun enemy forces until September 12, 2004. However, heavy fighting continued at the expensive of the local population who were forced to flee the city. The government of Turkey in Ankara claimed that the fighting had taken the lives of approximately 58 ethnic Turkmen civilians and demanded an end to military operations in Tal Afar. On September 14, 2004 the civilians camped outside Tal Afar were allowed to return to their homes after U.S forces cited that all the enemy insurgents had either been killed or fled the city.
