Budrys: A strong EU is no longer a choice, but a necessity

On 5 December, Minister of Foreign Affairs Budrys attended the annual conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the European Union (EU), titled 'The European Union - from a project for peace and prosperity towards a defence union', and discussed the key challenges for EU foreign policy in 2026.

"If Europe wants to be a geopolitical actor, it must start acting accordingly. For Europe to have a meaningful voice, we need to have leverage. With it, Europe could also help Ukraine in peace talks. What should we do? We must provide Ukraine with a reparations loan, EU membership, and create a Special Tribunal to ensure accountability for Russia's aggression," the Minister stressed.

In the opening speech, the Minister noted that, against the backdrop of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, in order to become a geopolitical power, the EU must pass a maturity exam and decide for itself whether it has the political will to make the necessary changes in the areas of security and defence and complete long-delayed homework.
"A strong EU is no longer a choice but a necessity. It's high time we took urgent care of the EU's military, financial, economic, and technological capabilities," remarked Budrys.
