US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has censured President Donald Trump for pushing the United States toward a "foreign war" with Venezuela.
Schumer warned Trump on Saturday about his hostile posture against Venezuela, saying that he is edging the United States "closer and closer to another costly foreign war" without congressional approval.
He rebuked Trump over the recent escalation towards Venezuela and argued that the president had upended the country's constitution.
"President Trump's reckless actions towards Venezuela are pushing America closer and closer to another costly foreign war," Schumer stated. "Under our Constitution, Congress has the sole power to declare war — not the President — and Congress has not authorized the use of military force against Venezuela."
The minority leader cautioned the US president against perpetual war, saying Americans were "tired of endless foreign wars."
"Americans are tired of endless foreign wars that cost the lives of countless American service members and drain precious resources," Schumer said.
"This is not an America First policy," he added.
The Democratic Senator from New York called for bipartisan pushback by lawmakers in Congress, urging other Congressmen from both sides of the aisle to "come together to return the power to declare war back to the people."
Schumer's strong criticism of Trump came after the US president wrote on his Truth Social platform that Venezuela's airspace should be considered "closed in its entirety."
Addressing US military personnel on Thanksgiving, Trump said that they would "very soon" begin stopping suspected Venezuelan drug traffickers "by land."
On November 17, he announced the possibility of the US forces' military invasion of Venezuela.
Asked whether he ruled out troop deployments to the energy-rich Latin American country, Trump responded, "No, I don't rule out that, I don't rule out anything."
US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Friday said multiple deadly attacks on alleged drug vessels in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean were legitimate strikes.
"As we've said from the beginning, and in every statement, these highly effective strikes are specifically intended to be 'lethal, kinetic strikes," Hegseth wrote on X.
"The declared intent is to stop lethal drugs, destroy narco-boats, and kill the narco-terrorists who are poisoning the American people. Every trafficker we kill is affiliated with a Designated Terrorist Organization."
Hegseth's statement followed reports from multiple news outlets of growing resistance from Washington's closest allies over the Trump administration's reckless militarization disguised as anti-drug policy.
Over the past month, the United States has resorted to a significant naval buildup in the Latin American waters amid tough rhetoric targeting democratically-elected political establishments in Venezuela and Colombia.
