'On the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, I express my deepest sympathy to all those who have lost loved ones - children, parents, siblings, and friends', said Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.
'Over the past two years, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, and many more have been injured. The suffering has been immense. Millions have been displaced. The situation in the West Bank is also extremely serious. The occupation, settler violence, and the expansion of settlements are making the situation increasingly unbearable.
'The fragile ceasefire in Gaza offers, for the first time in over two years, a glimmer of hope. It is crucial that the international community stands united and remains deeply engaged in efforts to bring this war to an end and secure a lasting political solution. While ending the war is vital, it is equally important to find a political resolution to the conflict. Only a two-state solution, in which Palestinians and Israelis live side by side in security and with hope for the future, can bring lasting peace.
'For peace efforts to succeed, the occupation must end throughout Palestine. The Palestinian government and population must have full ownership of all processes concerning Palestine's future. For several decades, Norway has been a close partner of the Palestinian government, and we will continue this engagement.
'Today reminds us of the collective responsibility we bear as individual nations and as a global community to support a just solution to this longstanding conflict. For generations, Palestinians have longed for safety, dignity, and the right to determine their own lives and future. Norway will contribute wherever we can, so that Palestinians can once again see a path out of the war and a hope for the future, and so that the Palestinian state can become a reality' said Eide.
