The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says addressing the plight of Palestinian refugees is essential to establishing peace and stability for all in the region.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini made the remarks in a post on his X account on Saturday on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

"The plight of Palestine Refugees must be addressed so that the region can find peace + stability for all," he said.

He added that true solidarity becomes meaningful if it turns into action.

Lazzarini emphasized that UNRWA represents the international community's dedication and support for the Palestinian refugees in their daily lives, while they await a fair and lasting political solution to the world's longest unresolved refugee crisis.

The UNRWA chief noted that the agency provides education and primary healthcare services to millions of Palestinian refugees throughout the region on a daily basis.

In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. On that day in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine.

The day found itself overshadowed this year by the catastrophic aftermath of the Israeli regime's two-year genocidal war against the people of Palestine in Gaza.

On the International Day of Solidarity, UN Secretary General António Guterres stressed the need to end the illegal Israeli occupation.

"This year's observance takes place amid a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, following severe violence and a humanitarian crisis that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands and forcibly displaced hundreds of thousands more. I repeat my call for an end to the unlawful occupation of the Palestinian Territory," he said.

Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed at least 70,100 people in Gaza, most of them women and children, and injured 170,983 others.

The onslaught has also led to the widespread destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure, creating a dire situation for the territory's surviving inhabitants.
