The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has condemned Israel for repeated violations of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and called on mediators to take urgent action to stop what it described as Tel Aviv's "deliberate attempts" to undermine the deal.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Hamas demanded an immediate halt to Israeli attacks across the besieged territory.
"This must be done through a clear and specific mechanism under the sponsorship and follow-up of the mediators, based on informing the mediators of any violations so they may take the necessary measures to stop them immediately and prevent unilateral actions that cause escalation and damage to the agreement," the group said.
Hamas added that Israeli forces had resumed advancing into areas from which they were required to withdraw under the ceasefire, triggering mass displacement amid ongoing aerial and artillery strikes. The renewed incursions, the group said, have shifted agreed-upon withdrawal lines and killed hundreds of Palestinians since the truce began.
The statement comes as a high-level Hamas delegation, led by senior official and truce negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, arrived in Cairo on Saturday for talks on Israeli violations and preparations for negotiations on the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
The visit is part of continuing diplomatic efforts and will include meetings with mediators to assess developments on the ground and discuss terms for implementing the next phase of the deal. The delegation is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other Palestinian factions in Cairo, talks that may pave the way for a broader meeting aimed at promoting Palestinian unity and exploring governance arrangements for post-war Gaza.
The discussions come amid persistent Israeli breaches of the ceasefire, which went into effect on October 10. Since then, Israel has killed nearly 350 Palestinians and injured more than 670 in attacks across Gaza, while continuing to restrict humanitarian aid to the besieged population. According to UNICEF, Israeli forces have killed an average of two Palestinian children every day since the ceasefire began.
The Gaza Government Media Office says Israel has violated the truce at least 497 times in 44 days.
The first phase of the US-brokered deal is currently in effect, while negotiations on the second phase remain unresolved. Key sticking points include the formation of a transitional authority and the deployment of a so-called stabilization force in Gaza, which are elements of US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan for the territory.
Western governments have largely supported Israel's war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, a campaign that has killed nearly 70,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. The bombardment has destroyed or damaged 83 percent of homes and buildings in Gaza, leaving more than 60 million tons of rubble behind.
