The chief of Polish diplomacy took part in a Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels. EU foreign ministers discussed among others acts of sabotage targeting Poland's railway infrastructure, Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, and the situation in the Middle East, the Sahel, and Sudan.
During the FAC meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski emphasised that the sabotage of Poland's railway infrastructure constitutes an act of state terrorism aimed at undermining the security of Poland and its citizens. EU foreign ministers agreed with this assessment. Poland's top diplomat also announced the withdrawal of consent for the operation of the Russian Consulate General in Gdańsk.
The discussion on Russia's aggression against Ukraine focused primarily on combating the so-called "clunker fleet," which supports the export of Russian raw materials. EU ministers agreed that the most effective way to limit Russia's war budget is to reduce its revenues from energy carriers and to pursue measures targeting its energy sector.
Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski, together with a group of foreign ministers from other European countries, reaffirmed support for a peace plan that will take into account Ukraine's interests and respect its territorial sovereignty. He emphasised that Europe's involvement in these arrangements is justified, as they will concern our continent's security. He also called for a prompt decision on the reparations loan for Ukraine to ensure funding of its defence and budget needs in the years to come.
Moreover, the EU ministers discussed the situation in the Middle East. They welcomed the UN Security Council's resolution in support of the peace plan for the Gaza Strip proposed by the US president and underlined the importance of provisions on Palestinian self-determination. The diplomats also spoke about the ways to increase the EU's engagement in the peace process and further support for the Palestinian Authority. On the sidelines of the Council session, the first Palestine Donor Group meeting was held at the ministerial level.
The participants of the Foreign Affairs Council noted the deteriorating security and human rights situation in the Sahel. One of the key challenges is countering Russian disinformation, which is damaging the European Union's image in the region. The member states' effective and coherent strategic communication is necessary.
During the Council meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski referred to the situation in Sudan. He condemned crimes against the civilian population in El Fasher and backed including their perpetrators into the EU sanctions regime. He also supported the statement by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union.
