Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Tehran is concerned about the continuation of tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan following an escalation of deadly border fighting between the two neighbors.

In a phone conversation with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi on Sunday, Araghchi said Iran is ready to help ease tensions and establish peace between the two Muslim countries.

The top Iranian diplomat also stressed the importance of promoting bilateral interaction and cooperation to secure Iran's share of water from the Harirud River.

The Pakistani and Afghan militaries clashed last month, killing dozens, in the worst violence since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021.

The two neighboring countries signed a ceasefire agreement in Doha on October 19 during the first round of peace talks mediated by Qatar and Turkey.

However, the second round of negotiations in Istanbul ended without a long-term deal.

The two sides kicked off the third round of peace talks in Istanbul on Thursday, but the discussions broke down the following day.

The Afghan foreign minister, for his part, hailed Iran's goodwill regarding the issue and elaborated on the existing situation and the outcomes of negotiations between Kabul and Islamabad.

Muttaqi reiterated Afghanistan's commitment to the ceasefire agreement and settlement of issues through diplomacy.

In a telephone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, earlier in the day, Araghchi expressed Iran's readiness to help resolve tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
