MANILA -- Malacañang said on Saturday that it has yet to receive any official confirmation regarding reports that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued a warrant of arrest against Senator Ronald Dela Rosa in connection with the Duterte administration's war on drugs.
"No confirmation," Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in a text message when asked to respond to Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla's statement that the ICC had issued an arrest warrant against Dela Rosa.
Castro added that the Marcos administration is "busy" preparing for Typhoon Uwan, as it continues to intensify disaster response efforts.
In an interview with dzRH, Remulla said an ICC arrest warrant had already been issued for Dela Rosa.
In a separate text message, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin clarified that while the ICC might have issued a warrant, it may not have yet transmitted it through the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) for enforcement.
"Remember that ICC might have issued, but might not have yet coursed the service through the Interpol," he said.
Similarly, the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime has not received any red notice, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said in another statement.
"At present, there is no actionable document for the Department to respond to. The DILG is currently focused on ongoing recovery operations in Cebu and on preemptive measures in preparation for the impact of Typhoon Uwan," the statement read.
Dela Rosa served as chief of the Philippine National Police from 2016 to 2018 during the launch of former president Rodrigo Duterte's controversial drug war, which was widely criticized for alleged extrajudicial killings and other human rights violations.
Since 2018, the ICC has been investigating the killings linked to the previous administration's anti-narcotics campaign, looking into the possible criminal liability of Duterte and other former government officials, including law enforcement officers involved in anti-drug operations.
Duterte is currently detained at the ICC facility in The Hague, Netherlands. (PNA)
