On Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda spoke by telephone with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, at the latter's initiative. During the conversation, the two leaders discussed Serbia's European integration process, progress on reforms, support for Ukraine, and the security situation in the Western Balkans.
The President underlined that supporting Ukraine and stopping Russian aggression are in the interest of security across the whole of Europe. At the same time, the Lithuanian President called on Serbia to fully align its foreign and security policy with the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy, particularly regarding sanctions against Russia.
"Contacts with the Russian leadership are currently sending a misleading signal about Serbia's solidarity with Ukraine and its position on European security issues. Russian propaganda channels Russia Today and Radio Sputnik operating in Serbia are spreading false information and destabilizing propaganda in the region," the President said.
The President emphasized that Lithuania supports EU enlargement, but that the accession process must remain based on progress and tangible reform results - strengthening the rule of law, protecting human rights, and promoting European values. He stressed the need to achieve measurable results in combating corruption, ensuring judicial independence, upholding media freedom, increasing transparency in the electoral process, and strengthening civil society.
"Progress in combating disinformation and enhancing media freedom is crucial for advancing Serbia's negotiations with the European Union. Lithuania is ready to share its reform experience and to strengthen practical cooperation with Serbia through the EU's Twinning and TAIEX programmes," the President said.
The President also emphasized that Serbia should continue to pursue good-neighbourly relations, especially with Kosovo, and actively contribute to regional stability and cooperation. According to the President, both Serbia and Kosovo should avoid unilateral or provocative actions that could further heighten tensions.
