The Israeli regime has built or approved around 48,000 settler units since prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office late in 2022.
According to Israel's Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the figure marks an unprecedented escalation in settlement activity in a short period.
The number is expected to hit 50,000, as the Israeli cabinet is set to approve the construction of approximately 2,000 new units in the West Bank before the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Israel's finance minister has approved the confiscation of about 26,000 dunams of land in the West Bank since the beginning of 2023.
More than 700,000 settlers live in over 230 settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the West Bank and East al-Quds.
The international community views the settlements as illegal under international law and the Geneva Conventions due to their construction on occupied territories.
The UN Security Council has condemned Israel's settlement activities in several resolutions.
In July 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared Israel's decades-long occupation of historical Palestine illegal.
The ICJ demanded the evacuation of all existing settlements in the West Bank and East al-Quds. It was mere words.
