Israeli troops have carried out a deadly ground incursion into Lebanon's southern province of Nabatieh, marking another violation of a ceasefire agreement that took effect almost a year ago.
Local media outlets reported that an Israeli military convoy consisting of several jeeps infiltrated the border town of Blida in the Marjayoun district early on Thursday, and broke into the town's temporary municipal building.
The incursion was accompanied by Israeli drones flying overhead. Gunfire was also heard during the raid.
The Blida municipality later announced that one of its employees, identified as Ibrahim Salameh, who had been spending the night inside the building, was killed by Israeli forces during their incursion.
According to the municipality, the occupation forces fatally shot Salameh while he was asleep.
Lebanese Army units were finally mobilized in the area opposite the occupation troops' deployment.
Additional reinforcements were called into the town, and the army subsequently deployed around the municipal building following the withdrawal of Israeli soldiers.
The body of Salameh was transferred to the local civil defense after the Lebanese army surveyed the site of the assassination.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam strongly denounced the Israeli incursion into Blida and the direct targeting of a municipal employee as "a blatant assault on Lebanon's state institutions and sovereignty."
"We stand in full solidarity with our people in the south and the border villages, who are paying the price for their right to live in safety and dignity under the authority of the Lebanese state," he said.
Salam noted that the Beirut government is pressing the United Nations and the countries sponsoring the ceasefire agreement to put an end to the Tel Aviv regime's recurrent violations and to ensure Israel's full withdrawal from Lebanese territories.
For his part, Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar censured the Israeli assault, saying, "We stress the need for an end to all attacks against civilians and public facilities."
Later in the day, Lebanon's official National News Agency (NNA) reported that a series of Israeli airstrikes targeted Mahmoudiyeh and Jarmaq regions in southern Lebanon.
There were no immediate reports about possible casualties and the extent of damage caused.
Given the significant losses incurred over 14 months of conflict and the failure to achieve its military goals in the aggression against Lebanon, Israel was compelled to agree to a ceasefire with Hezbollah, which took effect on November 27, 2024.
Since the implementation of the agreement, the occupying forces have carried out multiple attacks on Lebanon, including airstrikes across the nation, showing a clear disregard for the ceasefire.
Israeli forces have also taken control of five significant areas in southern Lebanon, namely Labbouneh, Mount Blat, Owayda Hill, Aaziyyeh, and Hammamis Hill, all situated near the border.
Lebanon has condemned the continued presence of the Israeli military as a violation of the ceasefire agreement and the established timeline for withdrawal.
