Romania has another F-16 Fighting Falcon squadron to conduct NATO-led enhanced Air Policing Missions

The 48th Fighter Squadron of the 71st "General Emanoil Ionescu" Air Base from Câmpia Turzii will conduct, starting October 20th, 2025, Air Policing Missions in the Romanian airspace.
The goal of the missions is to ensure the integrity of Romanian airspace, defend NATO's Eastern flank and reflect Romania's firm commitment to collective security.
The certification of the second F-16 Fighting Falcon Squadron demonstrates the high level of interoperability of the Romanian Air Force, as well as Romania's ability to contribute with modern defensive capabilities within a common air defence system.

Currently, there are three fighter squadrons conducting NATO-led air policing missions on Romanian territory. In addition to the 53rd Fighter Squadron from Fetești and the 48th Fighter Squadron from Câmpia Turzii, a detachment of the Tactical Air Wing 71 "Richthofen" of the German Air Force, consisting of 5 Typhoon aircraft, conducts air policing missions at Mihail Kogălniceanu.
