The President: We must better protect the EU's critical infrastructure

President of the Republic of Lithuania

Speaking at the European Council meeting on Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the importance of efforts to strengthen the European Union's competitiveness.

"Lithuania supports the further deepening of the EU single market. It is particularly important for us that efforts to reduce administrative burdens and remove other barriers to the free movement of goods and services deliver tangible results. Europe cannot afford to get bogged down in endless discussions," the President said.

According to the President, transparent and balanced regulation is essential for the successful digital transformation of the EU economy - one driven by artificial intelligence solutions and focused on enhancing competitiveness.

Gitanas Nausėda underlined the need to continue promoting innovation, open data and technical interoperability at the EU level. The development of digital infrastructure remain a priority.

"EU competitiveness will also largely depend on our resilience. We must focus more on protecting critical energy infrastructure, ensuring supply security and reducing energy prices," he noted.

Referring to the green transition, the President welcomed the compromise reached on EU measures for traditional economic sectors - including industry and agriculture - aimed at achieving interim climate targets by 2040. He also presented Lithuania's progress towards ensuring full electricity generation from renewable sources by 2028.

Lithuania is calling on the European Commission to take into account national and sectoral specificities, as well as potential socioeconomic impacts, when planning the financing of the EU's green transition, while also ensuring geographical balance.

Ahead of the European Council meeting, the President, together with other European leaders, issued a joint letter calling for swift decisions to boost EU competitiveness - reducing the bureaucratic burden on businesses, improving access to finance, and completing the single market in services, telecommunications, energy, and financial sectors.

Later on Thursday, the President will attend a Eurogroup meeting with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde.
