Ministry for Foreign Affairs

Iceland and Germany have agreed to deepen and increase cooperation between the two countries in the field of security and defense. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, and Boris Pistorius, the German Defence Minister, signed a Letter of Intent to this effect during the visit of Pistorius to Iceland 19-20 October.

The German Defence Minister met with Gunnarsdottir on Sunday 19 October. On Monday 20 October Pistorius paid a courtesy call on the Icelandic Prime Minister, Kristrun Frostadottir, before visiting Keflavik Air Base.

"I am very pleased to sign a declaration of intent on bilateral defence cooperation with my German colleague Boris Pistorius," said Minister Gunnarsdottir. "It will improve effectiveness & efficiency, strengthen interoperability & develop a shared understanding, in support of NATO deterrence & defence."

Iceland and the Federal Republic of Germany have been NATO allies for more than seventy years and have cooperated closely. The Letter of Intent, signed in Reykjavík, allows for further cooperation in order to strengthen monitoring and situation awareness in the North Atlantic region and increase security both for bilateral purposes and as a contribution to allied security and defense.
