Question: On October 12, Kosovo held municipal elections. How can the success of the Serb List influence the development of the situation and is it possible to speak of reinstating the Serb control over the north of Kosovo?
Maria Zakharova: Above all, it should be remembered in what conditions the Serb List, the major party of Kosovo Serbs, went to the elections. There were attempts to deny it registration, its representatives were expelled from territorial election commissions, they did not want to let Serbian-language media journalists to the polling stations. In the so-called Kosovo "parliament" Albanians, in gross violation of legal procedure, promoted a Serbian puppet loyal to Pristina and acting "Prime Minister" Albin Kurti to the "deputy speaker" position, even though he had no mandate to represent the non-Albanian population living in the region.
Notwithstanding the foregoing circumstances and hard pressure, the Serb List acted with dignity and convincingly won in nine out of 10 Serb-populated municipalities. We are speaking about an important step which is to help Serbs to regain their control over the northern areas where the power was usurped by self-proclaimed Albanian mayors since May 2023. There is no doubt that Albin Kurti will try to undermine this, and it's time to wait for new provocations from Kosovars ahead of the second round on November 9.
The massive support received by the Serb List shows an invariably high confidence of the Kosovo Serbs feel about Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the Belgrade's course toward protecting the interests of their fellow-countrymen in the country's southern provinces.
