The security of NATO's eastern flank remains a priority
Poland - Ministry of National Defence
16.10.2025
- The first panel concerned the ability to deter, NATO strategy and plans, but also something that is important to us and that I stressed in my speech, the Eastern Sentry operation established on the request of Poland after the violations of our airspace. We believe that this operation should be not just an activity, but a steady, well-planned multi-stage action connected with Baltic Sentry, so that these two operations that Poland initiated can be part of NATO strategy. Another topic was the support for Ukraine and here Poland is the country that provides this support from the first day of the conflict in the Ukraine. Our crucial mission, appreciated by other member states of the Alliance, is the transfer and securing of equipment and humanitarian aid, participation of our soldiers and security services in it. This operation could not function without Poland - stressed the deputy prime minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz in Brussels.
On Wednesday, 15 October, the deputy prime minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz was in Brussels, where he took part in a meeting of the NATO countries' ministers of defence, the Foreign Affairs Council with ministers of defence and a number of side events.
During his visit, the minister of national defence has met with Pete Hegseth, the US Secretary of War.
- A moment ago I had a very important meeting, and I would like to focus on it the most. I have just finished a discussion with the Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth. It is my third meeting with him since the beginning of his term, which started in January. I think that no other NATO country minister had so many opportunities to talk with him. We have confirmed the alliance commitments between the United States and Poland. I would like to once again thank all our citizens for this contribution to defence, for almost 5% of GDP assigned for defence, for being, as Pete Hegseth told me, the leader in defence, the leader of the Alliance in Europe. We have confirmed the relationship on the highest level and the presence of American soldiers in Poland, increasing their capabilities. We have finished our shared Iron Defender exercises, visited by the US ambassador to NATO. I have relayed this information, our experiences from these shared exercises, to the Secretary of Defence. (...) The stable presence of American troops in Poland is also confirmed.
- noted the minister of national defence.
The agenda of the events in Brussels featured important matters regarding European and Trans-atlantic security.
The talks focused on the Eastern Sentry operation, the aim of which is defending the Alliance's eastern flank and further support for Ukraine defending against Russian aggression. Topics of defence investments and the SAFE programme, of which Poland is the largest beneficiary with almost one third of the total funds, were also discussed. Building a "drone wall" as an element of border security, protecting critical infrastructure and preventing hybrid threats, was also on the agenda.
Before the main discussions, the deputy prime minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz met with the UK defence secretary, John Healey. The topic of their talks was the bilateral cooperation for strengthening deterrence and defece. The Polish minister of national defence also talked to the ministers of defence from Portugal and Germany.
