On Tuesday, October 14th, Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, participated, as a special guest, in the fifth edition of the European Defence and Security Conference, held in Brussels.
On this occasion, the Romanian official engaged in an exclusive dialogue with Aurélie Pugnet, chief defence correspondent for Euractiv publication. The discussion focused on Romania's priorities in the field of defence investments, in the context of security challenges on the eastern flank, with an emphasis on the upcoming Defence Readiness Roadmap2030, the use of SAFE funds and NATO's efforts to strengthen this flank.
Minister of National Defence emphasized the challenges that countries in this region must manage in the vicinity of the conflict zone, as well as the importance of common approaches to these challenges, both within the EU and NATO. He also emphasized the contribution of SAFE financing to supporting the member states' efforts at defence level and the importance given to this instrument at national level.
"Romania will use SAFE funds to procure essential military capabilities and to develop the critical infrastructure on the Eastern Flank, also aiming for a better connection with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova," the Minister of Defence highlighted.
Minister Moșteanu mentioned the threats posed to European security, emphasizing the need to take a determined approach and focus efforts on major acquisition programs, which have the ability to deliver results quickly. The official also highlighted the economic and societal dimension of efforts to strengthen the defence capacity.
In this context, he advocated for the consolidation of the European Technological and Industrial Base in a coherent geographical balance, focused on strengthening resilience at European level, through investments across the entire Union, which would also contribute to job creation, recalling the central role of society in the European governance process. In this context, he highlighted the specific situation of the Eastern Flank, which is the most exposed to threats.
"It is essential to take this opportunity to consolidate defence industries across Europe, generate benefits for citizens and generate their support for the European project so as to avoid the emergence of a Multi-speed Europe," Minister Moșteanu said.
At the same time, during the dialogue, the Romanian minister thanked the allied states that contribute to the deterrence and defence efforts in Romania, stressing the importance of European and Euro-Atlantic solidarity.
