
Romania and Spain, cooperation for stability on the Eastern Flank and in the Black Sea Region

On Wednesday, October 15th, Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, had a bilateral meeting with his Spanish counterpart, Margarita Robles Fernández, as part of NATO Defence Ministers Meeting held in Brussels.
The discussions focused on the current topics listed on the Alliance and the European Union agenda, as well as on enhancing bilateral defence cooperation.
With reference to the NATO agenda, the two officials addressed current issues regarding the strengthening of the allied posture on the Alliance's Eastern Flank, the Black Sea security and the unidirectional counteraction of risks and threats.
Minister of National Defence thanked his counterpart for Spain's commitment - within allied framework - to the Black Sea region and stated that he particularly appreciated "Spain's active participation in the NATO Battle Group Romania, as well as the professionalism of the air force personnel in conducting air policing missions, contributions that strengthen regional security and the allied posture on the Eastern Flank."
The two ministers appreciated the need to coordinate efforts to consolidate the Alliance stability and security, given the developments of the war in Ukraine. He also indicated the need to continue supporting vulnerable partners in the Black Sea region. The officials also discussed the stability in NATO's southern neighborhood and the need for dialogue with the partners in this area.
The two officials highlighted the good collaboration between the Romanian and Spanish armed forces within the missions and operations conducted under the aegis of the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy, with an emphasis on EUNVFOR ATALANTA Operation, whose operational command is exerted by Spain, and the EU Training Mission in the Central African Republic (EUTM RCA), whose command is exerted by Romania.
The meeting reconfirmed the political will to enhance bilateral cooperation within NATO, in order to achieve concrete results and to ensure operational complementarity and coordinated contributions to Euro-Atlantic security. In this context, the Romanian Minister of Defence stressed the importance of strengthening interoperability and joint training, as well as the openness to enhance cooperation in areas of common interest, including collaboration opportunities in the field of the defence industry and the SAFE financial instrument.
