Government Offices of Sweden

Press release from Ministry of Defence

Published 10 October 2025

The Government is investing more than SEK 5 billion to strengthen the Swedish Armed Forces' anti-drone capabilities and expand JAS 39 Gripen capabilities. The investment in anti-drone capabilities will enable the Swedish Armed Forces to shorten its lead times by eight years. The previous 2036 deadline for final delivery will now be brought forward to 2028. This decision will also enhance the resilience of the combat air system in times of peace, crisis and war. It marks the first use of the funds allocated in the Spring Amending Budget for 'opportune purchases'.

"The Government is now taking steps to rapidly operationalise anti-drone capabilities and increase the availability of our combat aircraft. There is a significant need for new anti-drone capabilities, and we are shortening lead times by eight years. This will result in increased safety and security for the Swedish Armed Forces and for Sweden," says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.

"The Government has made extensive investments in defence during this electoral period. Now we're boosting the Swedish Armed Forces' capability to deal with drones. This is a very important decision in terms of protecting us against the growing threat from drones," says Minister for Public Administration Erik Slottner.

Anti-drone investment of more than SEK 3.5 billion

The anti-drone investment will significantly enhance Swedish Armed Forces units' capabilities to tackle threats from drones. The funding will enable the Swedish Armed Forces to bring forward acquisition by around eight years. The investment will be used to acquire weapons and sensors to combat hostile drones. It also encompasses large quantities of warning devices and jammers, both wearable and vehicle-mounted, and interceptors to protect air bases etc.

Gripen capabilities increased by more than SEK 1.5 billion

The Government is also investing in increasing the capabilities of the JAS 39 Gripen combat air system. This includes the acquisition of additional spare parts and mission equipment, and base equipment, which will increase the Swedish Air Force's capability to deploy across more air bases and the availability of the combat air system. It will also increase capabilities to operate from temporary road bases. The resilience of the Swedish Air Force will thus increase, enabling it to act with high mission frequency in times of peace, crisis and war.
