Tehran, IRNA -- Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani has called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its crimes in the region.
Al Thani made the comments in a televised address at a preparatory meeting on Sunday ahead of an Arab-Islamic summit to discuss what Qatar described as Israel's "cowardly" attack on Hamas leadership in Doha about a week ago.
Pledging Doha's continued mediation efforts to end the war in Gaza, he said that "Israel must know that the continuous genocidal war against the Palestinian people, aiming at forcibly transferring them outside their homeland, cannot succeed, no matter what false justification is provided."
Al Thani accused the Israeli regime of intentionally expanding the war and turning down successive ceasefire proposals. "The time is now to stop the double standard and punish Israel for all the crimes it has committed and for it to know that the ethnic cleansing committed against the Palestinians will not be successful," he added.
He said that Israel has only been "encouraged" by the international community's failure to act, stressing that there could be "no leniency" in dealing with Israel's "barbaric" attack on Doha, a dangerous precedent that showed Israel is bound by "no red lines."
Earlier in the day, foreign ministers from the Arab League and the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held closed-door meetings and discussions.
According to Al Thani, the Arab-Islamic summit will condemn Israel's "barbaric" attack and support the lawful measures Qatar will take to safeguard its sovereignty.
Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said "silence and inaction" from the international community have "encouraged" Israel to continue its "crimes", believing it will be able to carry them out with "impunity."
Hissein Brahim Taha, the OIC chief, also stressed the need for united efforts to prevent future attacks in the region. "All the member states taking part in this summit are convinced that the Arab-Islamic cooperation must be cemented. Efforts must be uniform and united in the face of all these challenges," he said.
