MANILA -- The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Friday reiterated their commitment to the constitution amid calls for the military to withdraw its support from the government.

"The DND, together with the AFP, is fully committed to upholding the tenets of the constitution and our mandate to the Filipino people," DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said in a joint statement.

"As a professional and non-partisan organization, the DND and AFP remain steadfast defenders of our nation and our democratic institutions."

The two officials said asking for the military's withdrawal of support is futile, irresponsible and politically motivated as it distracts the AFP from focusing on its mission of thwarting threats to peace and regional stability.

The call comes amid reports of corruption in the government, particularly in the implementation of flood control projects, and invitations to join protest actions.

Teodoro and Brawner said they fully support the anti-corruption campaign of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

"We fully support the anti-corruption campaign led by no less than the President as we collectively work towards a responsive, responsible and just government for all," they said.

"This is not just a government initiative -- it is a national crusade for good governance, justice, and progress."

The two officials asked Filipinos to place their trust in democratic institutions, to respect processes, and to work together in the spirit of patriotism. (PNA)
