SINGAPORE (NNS) -- U.S. 7th Fleet's Combat Logistics Force received a friendly boost in capability in October and November with the deployment of a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) replenishment ship to Southeast Asia.
During its deployment as part of the 7th Fleet Logistics Force from Oct. 1 through mid-November, Her Majesty's Australian Ship HMAS Success delivered two million gallons of fuel and 120 pallets of material to six U.S. Navy combatants operating in 7th Fleet's Area of Responsibility.
The RAN assistance was welcomed, said Lt. Cmdr. Mark Morgan, logistics readiness officer on the staff of Commander, Task Force 73.
"Success provided critical support in areas where our forces would have been stretched thin," he said.
Task Force 73's area of responsibility covers 7th Fleet's 52 million square miles.
Success covered at-sea replenishment requirements in waters throughout Southeast Asia and into the Indian Ocean. The ship replenished cruisers, destroyers and frigates and took on fuel at sea from the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Tippencanoe (T-AO 199).
"This was good training," said Cmdr. Mark McIntosh, Success' commanding officer, who noted that underway replenishment procedures are almost identical between the two navies. "A key difference," he said, "is the amount of cargo transferred when dealing with the larger class ships of the U.S. Navy."
Success operated from Singapore during its support of the Fleet, and coordinated routinely with the CTF 73 staff, based here.
CTF 73 is the operational commander for more than 40 Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force, preposition and special mission ships, and coordinates the replenishment of food, ordnance, fuel and supplies for ships operating throughout 7th Fleet.
Success is not only capable of replenishment but can also provideat-sea delivery of fuel, ammunition, food and supplies.
HMAS SUCCESS is an Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) vessel of 17,933 tons fully loaded and about 515 feet in length.
